IPPC uses the Best Available Techniques (BAT) system to determine operating license conditions for industries whose facilities produce significant emissions.
About 50,000 industrial facilities throughout the European Union are concerned and are required to conform with the emission limit values.
This Directive presents a big challenge to today’s businesses, as companies which do not comply with the regulations risk having their operating license revoked.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions The IPPC Directive affects the following industrial activities: energy industries, metallurgy industries, mineral industries, chemical industries, waste management and other activities such as pulp, paper and board production, skin and hide tanning, slaughterhouses, intensive rearing of poultry or pigs, surface treatment using organic solvents, etc.
There are some exceptions and the activities mentioned above should also be judged based on the threshold values of production capacity or output.

BAT determines the emission limit values and, accordingly, the operating license conditions. The competent authorities of each Member State will periodically reconsider the license conditions and reassess the compliance of industrial facilities. The IPPC Directive has applied to new industrial installations since 30 October 1999.
If your business falls within the scope of the IPPC Directive and the authorities find that emissions from your facilities do not comply with regulatory limits, you will face liability and plant closure.
Four of Europe's 10 new member states - Latvia, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia - were granted transitional periods for certain facilities, with the deadline extended to the end of 2010
