On April 3, 2017, the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Malaysia adopted and published Food (Amendment) (No.2) Regulations 2017. This amendment included a revision of cadmium release requirements for ceramic ware intended to be used in the preparation, packaging, storage, delivery or serving of food in the Thirteenth Schedule (Regulation 28) under The Food Regulations 1985. These new requirements are effective April 15, 2017.

In addition, the test method of the requirements for ceramic ware is changed from MS 1817 (Ceramic Tableware – Specifications) to MS ISO 6486-1 (Ceramic ware, Glass Ceramic ware and Glass Dinnerware in Contact with Food – Release of Lead and Cadmium, Part 1: Test Method).

For products that are being imported into Malaysia, a period of three months was granted. The import controls for each consignment of ceramic ware complying with all the requirements under Regulation 28 of the Food Regulations 1985 will come into force on July 15, 2017.
