Passenger Ships

Bureau Veritas is at the forefront of helping yards and owners of passenger ships implement new safety regulations, energy savings and emission reductions.

We have developed calculation tools and rule notes to cope with new designs for large passenger ships, such as the use of lightweight materials, extensive glass superstructures and large atriums.

High expectations from passengers means specific needs and duties...

As an owner or a shipyard, you deal with specific issues for passenger ships. Passengers have high expectations: shopping centers, comfortable accommodations, relaxing spa centers, large public spaces, etc.

Due to their specific design (large rooms, stairs, elevators, large openings in decks and side shells, etc.), the structure strength, in particular, must be duly checked.

… and specific safety issues

Size and capacity of cruise ships have dramatically increased during the last few years, creating new concerns in regard to fire safety and evacuation.

The SOLAS requirement for “Safe Return To Port” applies to passenger ships that are a minimum of 120 meters in length or have three or more main fire zones that allow them to return to port under their own power and provide passengers with sufficient safe areas onboard the vessel after a flooding or fire incident.

Most of the materials used in constructing accommodation and service spaces must demonstrate satisfactory properties of fire reaction such as non combustibility or flame spread, smoke and toxicity level and many more.

Bureau Veritas offers a wide range of services to ensure compliance, safety and cost efficiency:

  • Ship classification and certification: SOLAS, COMFORT Class regarding noise & vibration limitation, CLEANSHIP notation to protect the environment, redundant propulsion, machinery systems automation

  • Marine advisory services: noise and vibration analysis at design stage to avoid costly problems later, shaft alignment with elastic calculation methodology, risk analysis of for use of gas propulsion system
  • Marine management system certification: integrated voluntary certification scheme covering ISO 9000, 14000, 22000 & 50000 and OHSAS 18000
  • Certification of marine materials and equipment

  • Alternative design studies or risk analysis studies supported by simulation with sophisticated software: fire zones over prescriptive SOLAS dimensions, use of oversized lifeboats
  • Marine software: VeriSTAR Project Management

Why choose Bureau Veritas for your passenger ship services?

Benefit from Bureau Veritas' large experience gained over multiple decades on a wide range of projects, from small expedition passenger ship to extra large cruise vessel, from double ended commuter to high capacity day or night ro-pax ferry, and by referring to our extended knowledge and understanding of complex rules and regulations.
