MSC Splendida earns Bureau Veritas’ “Six Golden Pearls” and “Energy Efficient Design” awards

We set our sights on doing things correctly right from the start, and we accepted no compromise. This 'Six Golden Pearl's award is an honest attestation not only to how we operate our ships, but how our shore side operations work in such an integrated way to support the fleet and our mission. It demonstrates very clearly that clear focus and teamwork in this business is a formula for success.

Executive Officer of the MSC Cruises

BUSINESS CHALLENGE

MSC Cruises, following several years of unprecedented growth, operates a young fleet of 10 large ships from 850 to close to 1,700 passenger cabins. With another 1,280 cabins vessel scheduled for delivery in 2010, MSC ranks number 4 in the cruise industry with a company 'quality and safety' policy centered upon the construction and operation of vessels with minimal impact to the environment. MSC took the delivery of MSC Fantasia, in 2008, which had received the prestigious 'Six Golden Pearls' award from Bureau Veritas for recognition of its high level of quality management and environmental protection. In 2009 MSC sought the same Bureau Veritas award for its sister ship, MSC Spendida, christened in July 2009 and in addition asked to also consider the efforts spent to reduce CO2 emissions on this ship.

SOLUTION

MSC specialists worked closely with Bureau Veritas to ensure the ship was built to the highest standards possible. Bureau Veritas conferred to MSC Splendida the 'Six Golden Pearls', the highest notations and certifications for Quality Health & Environment (QHSE) for cruise vessels. The recognition of the new MSC flagship is an integrated voluntary scheme certifying corporate compliance with the three highest international standards in the areas of Environment (ISO 14001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18001) and Food Safety (ISO 22000) and the additional notation Cleanship 2 for the three domains of potential pollution: air, water, and waste. Furthermore, taking into account the specific efforts in terms of hull, propulsion, low consumption for lighting, air conditioning, … MSC Splendida was the first ship to receive Bureau Veritas’ award for Energy Efficient Design scheme (EED) allowing owners, designers and yards to combine energy saving technologies to deliver the best overall energy performance for the specific vessel and service and consequently the lowest Green House Gas Emissions.

BENEFITS

Thanks to the EED standards, the MSC Splendida will save more than 12 per cent of total energy consumption compared to a more conventional or older vessel of previous generation, without any compromise on speed, comfort or hygiene. With the Bureau Veritas' 'Six Golden Pearls' label, MSC Cruises has obtained for MSC Splendida the most advanced environmental classification available in ocean transport, enabling it to benefit from the market differentiation and accompanying consumer loyalty. Passengers can enjoy their cruise with the knowledge they are sailing on one of the world’s most environmentally friendly ships.
