Bureau Veritas launches an internal carbon footprint tool

28/05/09

Customers, legal requirements, even new candidates increasingly request our own carbon footprint. Bureau Veritas is not regulated in this field but we aim at exceeding external expectations. This is the reason why the BV Carbon tool has been developed.

As Bureau Veritas Group is present in more than 140 countries, the very first challenge was to create a fully international tool. Our internal experts combined their professional know-how in this field, specifications of international standards and the results of the previous carbon assessments conducted in few Bureau Veritas sites to build up BV Carbon.

Within a simple excel format, complex hidden data translates kilometres and kilowatt-hours into tonnes of carbon.
Six domains are to be screened: business travels, energy consumption, ozone depleting substances, water and paper consumption and waste generation.

No need to be a professional environmental engineer or a computer expert to use BV Carbon. Data is easy to collect, from bills or suppliers; they can even be estimated in few cases. And data is also easy to input into the system.

Results are displayed as nice graphs but also as tables showing numerical values that can be used to illustrate tenders or reports. Further, improvement targets can be set and BV Carbon will enable each site to track its own progresses.

2009 will be the roll out year for Bureau Veritas agencies and in 2010 Bureau Veritas full carbon footprint will be calculated for the very first time. Through this process, Bureau Veritas demonstrate that we practise what we preach
