Structural vibration Challenge

Structural vibration of machine components, foundations and other ‘static’ plants can result in a variety of problems, ranging from obvious issues such as fatigue failure and false brinelling to those that are less obvious, for example malfunctioning of instrumentation. 

These can, in turn, lead to unforeseen plant downtime and/or safety issues.

What are Structural and Machinery Vibration Services?

By using a toolbox of measurement and simulation methods we are able to understand the underlying issues, identify the cause of a vibration problem and identify suitable remedial measures.

Investigation 

We employ a variety of measurement techniques on site to identify the cause of a vibration problem (including specialist measurement techniques such as translational and torsional laser vibrometry). 

We have experience in taking measurements in extreme environments, e.g. high temperature, high pressure and Zone 1 hazardous areas. 

Typical examples include: 

  • Experimental modal testing, followed by dynamic strain, pressure and vibration measurements on a gas turbine exhaust gas diffuser during operation to identify the cause of fatigue cracking

  • Dynamic strain, pressure and vibration measurements on a heat exchanger to identify the cause of internal failure, including the installation of strain gauges within the heater matrix prior to operational testing 

  • Investigation into the premature lifting of a pressure safety valve; site measurements and laboratory tests showed the cause to be a resonance of the valve’s bourdon tube controller excited by low level pressure pulsations in the main pipework. Modifications were made to the controller to overcome the problem. 

Simulation and Prediction 

We use a variety of simulation techniques to predict the vibration performance of a structure. 

For structural (and acoustic) simulation, finite element analysis is used at the design and also to provide a means of assessing potential modifications for problems which have been identified through measurement. 

Typical examples include: 

  • Structural response prediction at the design stage for the supporting foundation of three gas turbine powered generator sets. Comparison of the predicted structural vibration levels with acceptance criteria showed that modifications were required due to a structural resonance being excited by the residual imbalance of the generators. Potential modifications were explored (and their effectiveness quantified) using the simulation. 

  • Prediction of absolute dynamic stresses in a thermowell following earlier failures to identify the process parameters at which flow induced vibration levels would become unacceptable from an integrity standpoint. 

  • Acoustic and structural finite element modelling to identify the cause of ductwork cracking and tube failure in a Waste Heat Recovery Unit (WHRU). The simulation was used to assess the most appropriate modification. 

  • Development of a solution to a vibration issue affecting the reliability of a food production line.
