Beginning May 10, 2011 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is requiring that EnergyGuide Labeling on televisions conform with new amendments of the Appliance Labeling Rules. The new amendments require the familiar yellow and black energy guide labels, which are currently used on washing machines, refrigerators, and freezers, to be presented on the front surface of display model and packaged model televisions.
The label must display the television’s estimated annual energy cost, along with a comparison of the annual energy cost of other televisions with similar screen sizes. The purpose of this labeling is to increase awareness of the energy use of televisions and assist customers in making a more informed purchasing decision. In addition, the FTC will require websites that sell televisions to display an image of the full EnergyGuide label starting July 11, 2011.
