ASTM International Publishes Revised Hand - Held Infant Carrier Standard

The Hand-Held Infant Carrier Standard ASTM F2050-12 has been recently revised. This revision was approved on July 1, 2012 and published in August of 2012. The standard was originally created to address carrier handle strength to support the occupant, product tip over and falls from elevated surfaces. The latest revision includes several new requirements to address concerns raised by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) based on incident data and comments from consumers.


Summary of the Revision to ASTM F2050-12:
  • Inclusion of definitions for hand-held bassinet/cradle and hand-held infant carrier seat in order to assist in product designation
  • Clarifications made to Section 5.8 Labeling. The section numbers referenced have changed
  • The previous Section 6.1 was moved to Section 6.2 with some additional modifications
  • Inclusion of new test for Carry Handle Auto Locking, Section 6.1 and its test method, Section 7.1
    • Rigid, adjustable carry handles now need to meet one of the three criteria specified within section 6.1
  • Revision of Section 6.3 (formerly Section 6.2), Restraint System
    • Inclusion of restraint system requirements for hand held bassinet/cradles not intended to be used within a motor vehicle
  • Former Section 6.3 (Slip Resistance) is now Section 6.4
  • Inclusion of additional figures for assistance with new requirements (Figure 4 Lifting Fixture, Figure 5 Metal Hooks, Figure 8 Forward-Facing Test Set-Up Loaded Condition, Figure 9 Drop Weight Fixture, and Figure 10 Rearward-Facing Test Set-up Loaded Condition
