Bureau Veritas CEO outlines vision for a low-carbon world

26/11/12

As the UN’s COP18 conference kicks off this week in Doha, Bureau Veritas CEO Didier Michaud-Daniel explains to readers of Climate Change magazine the direction he believes the fight against climate change will take in the coming years.

"What has emerged from Rio is more encouraging than might appear at first sight", writes Didier Michaud-Daniel. "True, a lack of global political consensus spells the end of binding carbon reduction commitments and timetables. But other stakeholders have stepped in to fill the gap."

"Across our activities at Bureau Veritas, we are working with national and regional governments, corporates and NGOs to devise and implement highly effective carbon reduction initiatives."

The magazine will be distributed to delegates at COP18, the UN climate change conference held in Doha from November 26 to December 7. The conference is attended annually by around 16,000 Government representatives, UN agencies and NGOs and media.

In his article, Didier Michaud-Daniel explains that while global political consensus on binding carbon agreements may be lacking, "local" and sector-specific schemes are yielding some strong results. However significant challenges remain: "As companies, NGOs and governments work together to find new solutions to sustainability challenges we all face, the need for transparency and credibility is ever greater", he explains. And Bureau Veritas has an important role to play:

"Against this backdrop, independent assessment, verification and certification  have an increased value.  The development of sustainability services across all our businesses is already fully embedded in Bureau Veritas' strategy. But going beyond these specific  services, our engineering expertise, industry knowledge and global footprint will help our clients grow sustainably, developing new products, processes and services that have a positive impact on the world around them."
