TO PRESERVE A EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE
Flax is a specific culture and supply chain. In Europe, it is linked to regional origins and non-relocatable know-how. Its use involves textiles, homeware textiles as well as high-performance technical products such as composite materials.
To preserve and develop this sector, environnemental issue is key. Flax production in Europe guarantees a level of local farming without waste and without GMO.To improve products and meet consumers/buyers expectations in terms of fibre quality and traceability, a label has been created : European Flax®.
EUROPEAN FLAX®: TO BETTER PRODUCE AND TRADE FLAX
European Flax® is an audit based process. It requires all the supply chain from producers to retailers to be audited.
European Flax®’s objectives are:
■ to preserve the agricultural product,
■ to establish the role of flax as a natural vegetal fibre helping
■ to protect eco-systems through the best cultivation practices,
■ to certify traceability through each stage of production and offer consumer the added value of European fibre origine an flax/linen final products,
■ to be a brand open to all prospective potential: a qualitative visa that anticipates and participates in the opening of new markets for fashion, lifestyle, home and technical opportunities,
■ to participate in the entry into new geographical markets.
European Flax® fibre is certified by the Bast Fibre Autority.
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRACEABILITY CHAIN
For companies producing flax and flax fibre, the certificate is delivered by CELC.
For companies processing or trading linen/flax at all stages, until manufacturers of finished products, the certificate is delivered by Bureau Veritas Certification.
Retailers can also be certified by Bureau Veritas Certification.
Schema for European Flax® certification process:
Practically, companies should:
■ contact Bureau Veritas Certification and sign a contract, for a three year period,
■ be audited according to the European Flax® standard - using the technical criteria,
■ receive a certificate and promotion kit.
Each company gets a certificate with a license number. The list of certified companies is published on CELC web site: www.mastersoflinen.com
