Voluntary Scheme 2BSvs Biomass-Biofuel
Adopt the voluntary scheme 2BSvs for sustainable Biofuel and Biomass
The 2BSvs Challenge
The European directive 2009/28, which promotes the use of renewable energy, requires energy consumption for transport to be a minimum of 10% renewable (and sustainable) energy for each member state by the year 2020.
Sustainability criteria accompany the directive, in particular avoiding land-use changes as well as using new fuels that provide a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by at least 35% in comparison to conventional fuels.
Sustainability is required for feedstock and biofuel originating from any international producer if marketed in the EU-27.
Economic operators using biofuels that meet the sustainability criteria could benefit by receiving public aid.
What is the Voluntary Scheme 2BSvs?
The Voluntary Scheme 2BSvs was developed through a consortium of major actors in the French biofuel industry (agricultural and industrial) and with the contribution of Bureau Veritas.
The scheme’s objective is to demonstrate compliance, via an independent audit, with sustainability criteria set by the directive and to certify biomass used as a raw material and the produced biofuels.
This scheme relies on a 2BSvs voluntary audit methodology which culminates in the issuing of a certificate.
2BSvs addresses:
Farmers and agencies responsible for the collection of biomass from farms - agricultural cooperatives and agribusiness companies (“biomass production” component)
Processors and traders (“mass balance system” component) of feedstock and biofuels.
The Voluntary Scheme 2BSvs scheme covers all sustainability criteria required by the directive throughout the entire chain of production and processing for both the European market and for production imported from outside the E.U.
