Q: What is BVE3?
A: BVE3, Bureau Veritas’ Environmental Emission Evaluator, is a tool to support supply chain partners in reducing the environmental impacts through evaluating factories’ daily and weekly discharge potentials.  This avoids the sole reliance on one time screening of materials, chemicals and discharge.

BVE3 can work in combination with other traditional supply chain controls (chemicals screening, testing and factory audits) for a greater visibility on ongoing compliance to the priority chemicals. For industries with wet processing, BVE3 assists in constructing discharge scenarios for the hazardous substances (auxiliary chemicals, dyes, et.) that are used along the manufacturing process and released to the environment (wastewater discharge) from the factories. 

Q: Who can use BVE3?
A: As BVE3 is a model for systematic estimation of discharge scenario, it can be used by supply chain with wet processing facilities to estimate the discharge scenario of processing units, including vertical processing units, printing & dyeing factories (fabric / yarn), wet processing units and laundries.

Q: What is the standard output of BVE3? How frequent is it generated for a facility implementing BVE3?
A: The standard output of BVE3 is to report:
I. Total number and quantity of hazardous substances used in factory (monthly)
II. Monthly discharge of hazardous substances (total quantity and concentration)
III. Compliance to Brand PRSL / MRSL / SVHC / ZDHC MRSL based on estimated wastewater discharge scenario
IV. Chemical Management Indexes - Transparency Index; Greener Chemical Usage Index; and Clean Emission Index

BVE3’s user-friendly platform provides multiple options to generate monthly reports including multiple business intelligence reports. While monthly reports are published; half yearly and annual reports are available on request.  

Q: There are other service providers offering different chemical management solutions, why should I choose BVE3 and how it is different from others?
A: BVE3 is the only available commercial model which can assist in constructing discharge scenario based on the actual data assisting precise estimations. Actual data includes (but is not limited to) monthly chemical use record, chemical compositions and concentrations, water consumption and wastewater discharge quantities.

In addition, BVE3 is built by adopting the most up-to-date database with specialist inputs within the parameter selection. BVE3 is also capable of supplementing the missing information and is designed as a modularized model that permits not only flexible inputs from actual database values, but also a customized output format and analysis.

As we know that a wide variety of chemicals are often used in processing facilities, it can be extremely expensive, even technically unfeasible, to measure all the pollutant discharged into wastewater. BVE3 provides a very economical way to estimate such discharge pollutant amount. 

Q: As BVE3’s estimation model aims to evaluate pollutant discharge scenario, is there any independent validation done for this estimation model?

Q: Is BVE3 a commercial reality following successful Pilots?
A: Yes, successful pilots have been completed. Pilots were done on some vertical processing units and dyeing & printing factories in China and Bangladesh.
Q: I am a Brand/Retailer, what are the benefits for me in implementing BVE3?
A: Most of the Brands/Retailers have committed to Sustainable Manufacturing Practices and established their own RSL, MRSL, or joined different forums such as ZDHC and/or SAC. BVE3 reports a discharge scenario (based on the actual data) that can assist in identifying whether substances used in the wet processing plant are listed as Restricted Substances, that a specific Brand/Retailer has committed to (such as Brand RSL, MRSL, ZDHC MRSL, SVHC).

BVE3 reports may also serve as a reference for brands on their committed Restricted Substances to facilitate documentation and reporting actions.  Actions such as identifying the chemical source; developing a plan to reduce the consumption of hazardous substances; and exploring green alternatives can thus be conducted. The Greener Chemical Use Index of BVE3 can also help to track the improvement of the situation. 

Q: I am a Brand with a global supply chain. I have over 100 manufacturing facilities across Asia and South America. Can I implement BVE3 for my complete supply chain?
A: Yes, BVE3 is an online portal designed to serve the needs of Global Supply Chain. BVE3 online portal allows wet processing facilities (dyeing, laundry, printing, etc.), anywhere in the world, to input monthly chemical inventory (chemical information log) which will be used to estimate discharge scenario. BVE3 online portal has different interfaces including Brand/Retailer Client interface and Factory Interface to serve global supply chains.  

Q: I am a garment manufacturer with vertical set-up (dyeing, printing, cut & sew and washing). Can I apply BVE3 for my vertical setup as an independent unit?
A: Yes, BVE3 is an online portal which is designed to serve such need. A manufacturer with vertical set up can apply BVE3, and our factory interface platform is specially designed to work on this situation.

Q: What is BVE3 platform? How safe it is from data security perspective?
A: BVE3 platform is an online portal which allows textile processing facilities, anywhere in the world, to input monthly chemical inventory (chemical information log) to estimate the discharge scenario. It is part of Bureau Veritas’ OneSource Suite. It is fully protected and completely safe.

Q: As a Brand, can I get access to my supply chain data to review supplier’s performance?
A: BVE3 online portal has multiple interfaces including a ‘Brand/Retailer Interface’. The Brand/Retailer Client User can generate different business intelligence reports which provide an overview of the participating facilities. BVE3 online portal is also equipped to provide Chemical Management Indexes, i.e., Transparency Index, Greener Chemical Usage Index, and Clean Emission Index.

Q: Does BVE3 platform support Business Intelligence reports? If yes, what are different options?
A: The BVE3 web platform allows retailers, brands and factories to obtain reports for self-evaluation and performance improvement purposes. The fully flexible and customizable function allows users to analyze this information and carry out performance analyses, such as substance analysis (total versus hazardous or average usage versus the previous period) and our specially designed chemical management index criteria:

• Transparency Index:  A measurement of the declared chemicals within the chemical inventory and the quality of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
• Greener Chemical Usage Index: Provides an indication to the proportion of chemicals declared under the Chemical Inventory List (CIL) and used in the manufacturing process.  They are qualified as the non-hazardous substances (defined under MSDS).
• Clean Emission Index: Represents the level of hazardous-free discharge during the manufacturing process

Q: As a manufacturer, can I control exposure of my data/report at BVE3?
A: Yes, BVE3 online portal provides the high flexibility to control the exposure of data. The manufacturer can set-up the profile to define the level of data exposure including who can view. 

Q: Can I get substance level discharge data as per my RSL/MRSL?
A: Yes, BVE3 output (report) can be customized in this way. BVE3 specialists analyze the inputs and report on the compliance with retailer/brand RSL, MRSL, and various regulations such as REACH in Europe and the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Group’s Manufacturing RSL.
