Playing it safe - Interview with Bureau Veritas’
Toys Technical Consultant
Q: Tell us what Bureau Veritas does and how you can help all businesses in the toy trade.
A: Bureau Veritas is a global testing, inspection and certification company delivering high quality services to help clients meet the growing challenges of quality, safety, environmental protection and social responsibility. We have toy testing facilities in the EU, China, and Taiwan, India, Vietnam and the United States.
Q: What sets Bureau Veritas apart from the competition?
A: We work with our clients more like partners. Our services help our clients to achieve the highest levels of safety, quality and reliability. In turn, our services maximize ROI, by reducing product returns, increasing customer satisfaction and encouraging repeat customers. We have a dedicated team of specialists who are always on hand to offer technical advice and guidance for our clients. We help them through the minefield of legislation and interpretation of technical standards.
Q: Who were you hoping to see at the UK Toy Fair?
A: We liked to hear how the industry is shaping, the good news stories from the people that have been involved in the industry as we welcomed everyone to our stand. We found the Toy Fair a good opportunity to meet with all our clients, as there was nothing better than an on-site face-to-face meeting to discuss current topics and future opportunities.
Q: Why should retailers be sure to stop by and see you?
A: We deal with a wide variety of clients and we have seen recently that our retailers are now also "own-branders", which means that under the Toy Directive, they take on exactly the same responsibilities as a manufacturer. This is where we can add value, benefiting both new and existing clients, to help maximize the consumer sales.
Q: Are there any surprising ways you can help businesses that maybe people wouldn't expect?
A: As we deal with so many different types of companies, including manufacturers, importers, retailers and enforcement authorities in many different regions, we can often suggest market access solutions to help them comply with the relevant Directives and Regulations for their target markets.
Q: How do you help businesses stay up to date with safety directive and legislation throughout the year?
A: We issue regular bulletins and newsbytes as well as giving seminars and presentations. These can be delivered within our offices or at a client's own premises. The latter can be very cost effective if several people from the company in question wish to attend.
Q: What do you anticipate will be the hot topics in safety and legislation developments for 2017?
A: Well, there are amendments and revisions in the pipeline to the EN 71 series of standards as well as changes afoot to the electrical toy standard EN 62115. Discussions on the flammability of toy disguise costumes will be continue for the next year at least. The EU Commission will always propose and implement additional chemical requirements.
Q: Bureau Veritas is a longtime supporter of Toy Fairs. Why is it so important for you to exhibit each year?
A: The concern around toys and their safety to the children that use them is large part of the industry and this also shapes part of our company's future strategy. We also find that there is sometimes a stigma around testing, in the way that it is seen as a necessary cost on the manufacturer's or retailer's bottom line. When we start to work with a client, they see how our services benefit their product development and increase their product quality. Toy Fair gives us the opportunity to show clients how we can be a real value-add partner to their business and aid in their future development of new products.
