There are currently eight major allergens that food manufacturers in the US are required to identify on their package labels: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans. However, there is growing evidence suggesting that there are a number of Americans with sesame allergies, comparable to the number of individuals with soy and fish allergies at more than 0.1% of the US population.
Because of this growing concern, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requesting information on the prevalence of sesame-containing foods distributed in the US (particularly products where it does not specifically declare the presence of sesame such as products with tahini) and the potential regulatory impact of requiring a new allergen disclosure.
