Recently, the Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) provided clarification regarding the applicability of the ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018 standard. When the 2018 revision of this standard was released, the wording within the scope section caused confusion and debate as to whether or not curtain and drape type products were applicable under this standard. Historically, the standard was applied to window covering products that used cords in its operation or movement of the product. Examples of covered products were styles such as horizontal blinds, pleated shades, roll-up blinds, Roman style shades, etc. But now, in the 2018 revision, the scope statement indicates that it also applies to “traverse rods (including products that are used with traverse rods, e.g., curtains and drapes)”.
The WCMA recently confirmed that although this wording may be confusing or seem to imply that they are applicable, the intent was not to cover curtain and drape type products within this standard. Curtains and drapes had not been applicable to the standard previously, and it was not intended to have them be applicable now.
In the next revision of this standard, the WCMA plans to incorporate new clarification, which will hopefully eliminate any confusion about this scope section.
