Buffalo, New York, April 2016 – Recent advances in technology have brought together the apparel, technology, and textile industries to develop new capabilities in fabrics with the potential to change how everyday consumers interact with their clothes and other textile products. As traditional consumer and products, electronics, textiles, and apparel, each have well-known standards for performance and testing. However, as electronic capabilities are integrated into textiles and apparel, there are questions as to whether existing standards apply to new smart fabrics.
To keep pace with this fast growing segment and to address the challenges related to standards for wearable technology and electronic textiles, ASTM and AATCC organizations have established committees and Bureau Veritas’ Dr. Sandeep Khatua has been asked to lead both groups.
ASTM D13.50, Smart Textiles
ASTM International has formed a new wearable/smart textile subcommittee (ASTM D13.50, Smart Textiles) and Dr. Sandeep Khatua has been selected to be the Subcommittee Chairman. The new ASTM Subcommittee on Smart Textiles will have its first organizational meeting be held in June. A separate, joint workshop with AATCC will also be part of this committee meeting. The objective of this workshop is to educate those in the area of smart textiles by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and to identify new opportunities for standards in this emerging industry segment. Sandeep is in charge of organizing this workshop with ASTM. For more information please visit: http://www.astm.org/D13WrkshpJun2016
AATCC RA111, Electronically Integrated Textiles
Dr. Khatua is also heading up the AATCC’s new formed research committee - RA111, Electronically Integrated Textiles, which is tasked with developing methods and terminology for the testing of electronically integrated textiles. This committee will meet in May to finalize their scope and create priority action items.
To encourage education and discussion on Wearable Technology and Electronic Textiles, two speaking events are coming up that Dr. Khatua will be speaking at:
The Smart Fabrics Summit, hosted by the US Department of Justice and the Industrial Fabric Association International, will take place on April 11, 2016 in Washington, DC. The Summit features panel discussions on policies affecting the development of the smart fabrics industry and demonstrations of innovative new smart fabrics products by private companies. Sandeep will take part in a panel discussion titled: Smart Fabrics Standards – Building the Foundation for Growth, that will explore the current state of standards in the smart fabrics space, whether certain existing standards can be adapted to address the needs of smart fabrics manufacturers, whether new standards are needed, and which organizations are beginning exploratory work on possible smart fabrics standards. The AATCC 2016 International Conference will take place on April 19-21 in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. This annual conference offers presentations covering the entire textile and materials supply chain. Sandeep is a featured speaker in the Concept 2 Consumer® Track. Speaking on Managing the Speed to the Market, Sandeep will address issues related to component testing and maintaining records for multiple components and trims that may cross many styles, and provide a solution to manage this challenge and minimize cost.
