Candle Testing

Managing Risk and Meeting Consumer Needs

Industry Challenge

As candles have grown in popularity, so has public awareness of the health and safety issues associated with them, such as the potential for candle fires and concern about lead in metal-cored candle wicks. According to the National Candle Association, nearly 10,000 residential fires are caused each year by the careless or inappropriate use of candles. While the number of candle-related fires has been on the decrease, there are still far too many, and this has captured the attention of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

Despite these concerns, candles remain in demand – but today’s consumer is more selective and safety-conscious. In this environment, testing has become an increasingly important tool for retailers and manufacturers to minimize risk and ensure that their candle products meet the quality and performance expectations of today’s consumer.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If there are not federal requirements mandating testing, why should I test my candles?

While there are not many federal requirements for candles, the CPSC and Health Canada expect products to be in
compliance with current industry standards. The ASTM standards are understood to be the minimum safety requirements with which candles and candle accessories should comply. Although not federal requirements, the CPSC and Health Canada have recalled products that have not been in compliance with these standards. The CPSC and Health Canada actively participate in the ASTM subcommittee for candle fire safety.

  • Candles have been around for years. Do you anticipate any changes to candle standard requirements?

The ASTM subcommittee regularly monitors candle fire incidents and continually makes improvements to testing
requirements. The use of different candle designs, materials and components expose new dangers. Based on industry concerns, the ASTM group is currently proposing new additions to the candle standard. As the changes become finalized, Bureau Veritas will provide new details about how these changes may affect candle product testing. Subscribe Today for Regulatory Email Updates:
