Certification Of Wind Turbine Rotor Blades

Certification Of Wind Turbine Rotor Blades

Based on IEC 61400 series: the IEC international standard for wind turbines

Rotor blades are one of the most highly stressed components of a wind turbine. They are subject to both high extreme loads caused by the 50-year gust and consequent fatigue damages due to their cyclic loading and 20-year service life. Failure of a rotor blade can have tremendous impacts on the safety of the persons and goods around the turbine, on the turbine itself and on the financial returns of a wind farm.

Confidence in your design - Certification of the rotor blades by a recognised, independent third party provides assurance to all stakeholders that new optimized blade designs are safe and fully compliant with international standards and state-of-the-art industry practices.

International recognition - Bureau Veritas Certification France is accredited for the certification of wind turbine type and component by COFRAC* for IEC 61400 standards. Bureau Veritas Certification France is also recognized as a certification body by IECRE. Upon request, Bureau Veritas Certification France can certify against other specific standards.

Bureau Veritas Certification France has signed a framework agreement with LM Wind Power, the world’s leading supplier of components and services to the wind industry, covering the certification of wind turbine rotor blades to international standards. The contract follows a successful collaboration between both companies, sharing knowledge and working together to fully understand the requirements and needs. This engagement and shared commitment are now cemented with the framework agreement.

LM Wind Power’s VP Business Development & Strategic Alliances, Frank V. Nielsen, is confident that the new agreement will benefit LM Wind Power’s customers and the industry in general: “We already have a successful working relationship with Bureau Veritas on our ISO 9001/14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications. It was only natural for us to include the rotor blade certification as well, thereby effectively expanding the qualified certification offer in the industry. Based on their large competence base, customer focus and global footprint, Bureau Veritas lives up to our requirements for a value adding certification, which allows us to deliver a documented and highly reliable product to our customers.”

    • Process:
      The general certification process is as follows:

    • Evaluation of Design Basis: review of the design methodology, design assumptions, design
      specifications, etc.

    • Evaluation of the rotor blade design:
      • Materials : qualification, testing of material properties;
      • Review of blade structure;
      • Review of calculation reports: ultimate strength, fatigue strength, buckling strength, inter-fibre
      failure, bonding shear strength;
      • Independent calculations to verify the blade model and calculations;
      • Review of the lightning protection system;
      • Review of the manufacturing procedures;
      • Review of the blade manuals (fabrication, transport, installation, maintenance).

    • Manufacturing surveillance: quality system in place, verification of the implementation of the
      design specifications in the manufacturing instructions, surveillance of the fabrication of one

    • Test evaluation: review of the test plan and test reports.
