Artificial Grass on Football Fields: Research and Analysis

In the Netherlands, there are about two thousand football fields that use artificial grass. On about 90 per cent of these artificial pitches, rubber granules are spread over the field. This is done to resemble a natural grass pitch; the use of the granules has an effect on ball speed and sliding tackles which matches the performance of a natural grass field.

These granules are produced from recycled tires and other rubber materials. Within the Netherlands research is being done, which claims that the granules can contain hazardous materials.

Bureau Veritas’ laboratories can help you with identifying the risks by conducting research on the presence of plasticizers and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in rubber granules for artificial grass soccer fields and rubber tiles.
